In 1921 August and Catherine Bonneau purchased 70 acres of land in Schellville, then a remote area in southern Sonoma which required a full day’s travel time from San Francisco. Reminding them of the Bordeaux region of France near the where they were born, the Bonneaus farmed the land and ran a dairy as well as a small country store/deli.
In 1989, their daughter Yvonne fulfilled Catherine’s vision of owning a vineyard by planting 30 acres of Chardonnay grapes on the property. As matriarch of the family farm, Yvonne began supplying some of the best-known wineries in Sonoma and Napa and the vineyard consistently received high praise for the quality of its fruit. Yvonne looked forward to the day the family could produce their own wines.
In 2001, on behalf of her 4 children, Yvonne’s son John Bambury realized her vision by introducing Bonneau Wines with the release of an estate Chardonnay. Since then, production has expanded to encompass a range of wines produced both from the family estate and other prestigious vineyards in Sonoma and Napa. The family’s commitment to making fine wines has already been recognized by wine aficionados, critics and everyday wine lovers alike.
